Analysis of Surname Distribution, Part 2

Please see Part 1 for the beginning of this report by Keith Hanna, Clan Genealogist.

Part 2: Analysis of Hanna/Hannah/Hannay/Hanney Surname Distribution Worldwide of Clan Hannay Society Members as of early February 2016

In February 2016 I asked [Membership Secretary] Jacquie if she could share with me the Clan Membership data so we could plot the information by geography, by surname and by region in North America. The graphs below summarise our findings. This table below shows that of the 573 Clan Members in early February 2016, almost 45% came from the USA and 36% from the UK and Ireland (when constituent countries are aggregated together). Figure 7 illustrates the same data by pie chart.

Surprisingly, the Clan has many more members in Scotland and England than in Ireland where there is statistically a bigger opportunity to expand membership. There are likely historical and geographical reasons for this over the last 50 years. I was also amused to see we have more members in Norway than in Wales! What was also quite surprising to me is that we have almost as many members with non-clan surnames than those who have the four surnames.

When I roughly split US members by region: East (Eastern Timezone), Central (Central and Mountain Timezones) and West (Western Timezone) designations for both USA and Canadian Members yielded these graphs and tables in Figures 9 and 10:

When I roughly split US members by region: East (Eastern Timezone), Central (Central and Mountain Timezones) and West (Western Timezone) designations for both USA and Canadian Members yielded these graphs and tables in Figures 9 and 10:

One conclusion from this study therefore is that our US Membership is congregated on the East Coast yet most Clan Surname holders are located on the West Coast (according to www.forebears.co.uk). For Canada, the reverse seems to be the case.

Finally, I was interested in when our 573 members joined the Clan and correlated the data to produce the following list of active members by joining date to the clan:

The data can also plotted as a graph (Figure 11) to view it visually:

The Membership joining data suggests that apart from our ongoing new membership efforts the advent of the Internet in the early 1990s and Social Media in the mid 2000s has driven up Membership the most dramatically. Having a 50th Anniversary every year would be good too it seems if it could be possible!
